Program

Day 1

Arrive in Abruzzo and visit the city of L'Aquila. Founded by the Swabians in 1254 as a fortified city, not far from the ruins of ancient Amiternum. According to tradition there were 99 castles that joined to form the city and each wanted to have its own square with its own church and fountain. Rich in monuments, among which the unique fountain of the 99 spouts and the basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio are worth mentioning. Where the remains of St. Celestine V creator of the Bull of Forgiveness are enshrined. In addition, we will visit the Basilica of San Bernardino, the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, before Piazza Duomo and the Spanish Fort. After the visit we continue to Sulmona for hotel accommodation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2

Plain of Campo Imperatore for its particular beauty called the Little Tibet, visit to the Medici village of S.Stefano di Sessanio. Santo Stefano di Sessanio is a small village located within the Gran Sasso National Park and is a town that has managed to maintain its medieval charm. Historically, Santo Stefano di Sessanio developed from the 14th century when it became a thriving town that lived off agriculture and sheep farming. The town under the hegemony of the De' Medici became an important economic center of the Signoria of Florence because of the flourishing trade in the "carfagna" wool that was produced here to be processed in Tuscany and then sold throughout Europe. - Free time for lunch. In the afternoon visit to the monastic complex of Bominaco founded in the 10th c. After the visit continue to Sulmona for hotel accommodation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3

Abruzzo Trans-Siberian Railway - Reaches Sulmona station, platform 1, about 10:10 a.m. Departure historic train 10:30 a.m., on 1930s Centoporte cars, with assigned and numbered seats and carriage. The train on board is equipped with heating, in the carriage there is the guide of our staff for assistance, timetable notices and for informative part on history of the railway and the territory crossed. Panoramic route going up the Conca Peligna through the Colle Mitra, passing the ancient village of Pettorano sul Gizio and entering the valley of Cansano, territory of the Parco Naz.le della Maiella.After 31 km of continuous ascent, descent to Roccaraso or Castel di Sangro. Free time for lunch. Continue by coach to Pescocostanzo, visit Pescocostanzo and return to Sulmona for a walk through the historic center. After the visit, continue to Sulmona for hotel accommodation, dinner and overnight stay

Day 4

In the morning breakfast at the hotel and release of rooms, on the way back guided tour of the town of Atri. Historic monuments and palaces, churches, works of art and evocative natural landscapes make this center of the Teramo province an authentic little jewel. Guided visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries, rising partly on an ancient Roman cistern transformed into a crypt, an authentic masterpiece of the Abruzzo Renaissance. Free lunch. End of services. Departure for Verona where you will arrive late in the evening.
