MILANA DAY AMONG ITS WONDERS AND TREASURES:
PROGRAM
THE VINCIAN CENACLE, THE CHURCH OF SAN MAURIZIO
AND THE BASILICA OF ST. AMBROSE
Departure from Verona by coach or train to Milan. On arrival after a short break we reach the Church of San Maurizio built on the remains of Roman buildings and also known as the Sistine Chapel of Milan, it was built
in 1503 by two important 16th-century architects, Dolcebuono and Amadeo, who were also active in the construction site of Milan Cathedral, in Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Santa Maria presso San Celso and at the Certosa di Pavia.
Today the monastery is fully open to visitors and features beautiful 16th-century frescoes, many of them from the workshop of Bernardino Luini and others painted by Boltraffio a pupil of Leonardo, Vincenzo Foppa, the Campi brothers
and by Simone Peterzano, Caravaggio's master. The whole ensemble, embellished by a beautiful serliana loggia and a rare organ by Gian Giacomo Antegnati, is a perfect and almost intact example of the 16th-century Milanese school
and among Milan's churches it is certainly one of the most distinctive and fascinating.
Lunch Break.
After lunch meet with our guide for a visit to the Cenacolo Vinciano at the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. After visiting the Cenacolo Vinciano, impressed by so much splendor, with a short walk
we reach the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio for an inside visit with our licensed guide from Milan. The Basilica of the patron saint Meneghino was consecrated in 387. In the 11th century it was rebuilt in the Lombard Romanesque style.
It presents an uncommon exterior appearance with two tall towers.
At the end of the visit, some free time is provided before departing for Verona
