Founded by the Ubaldini before the year 1000, it is considered one of the oldest in Tuscany. Church and convent were rebuilt to the design of the architect Michelozzo at the behest of Cosimo de' Medici.
(Photo 50) As in Cafaggiolo and the Castello del Trebbio, in this complex the architect combined the characteristics of the new Renaissance taste with the experience of the medieval architectural tradition; thus in the building of the choir he used ribs, vaults and cornices of clear late Gothic reference, while in the cloister, the cenacle and the monks' cells he worked in line with the models of the new architecture matured in the city environment.
(Photo 52) Many were the precious gifts left by the early Medici to the monastery, and among them stands out the precious wooden crucifix attributed to Donatello, now preserved in the small museum of sacred art.
